artist statement
Stevan Kojić constructs techno-ecological environments that operate both as real systems and conceptual gestures. His practice merges DIY engineering, ecological improvisation, and systemic absurdity, often forming habitats that question the very notion of sustainability, autonomy, and control.By incorporating elements such as infrared imaging, solenoids, LED grow lights, and found materials, Kojić explores what it means to simulate survival within post-industrial, post-utopian space. Engaging critically with post-ideological technoutopianism, his installations examine how seemingly autonomous systems mask deeper contradictions, revealing tensions between control and collapse, intention and malfunction.
Within his ongoing cycle Self-Sustaining System of Absurdity, Kojić reclaims dysfunction, error, and improvisation as active agents of critique. His works evoke states of survival and fragility where the organic and the synthetic coexist in unstable, yet poetic symbiosis. The systems he constructs often reflect on techno-social frameworks that appear self-sufficient, yet expose their absurdity and precarity upon closer inspection.
cv
Stevan Kojić (b. 1973, Serbia) is a visual artist based in Novi Sad. He earned both his BFA and MFA from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade, and received his PhD in Fine Arts from the Academy of Arts, University of Novi Sad, where he is working as a full professor at the New Media Arts department. He was also a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Trebinje (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cetinje (Montenegro). His practice explores intersections between ecology, technology, and systemic critique, frequently materialized as hybrid, self-regulating environments that function simultaneously as sculptural systems and conceptual provocations. His long-term conceptual framework, Self-Sustaining System of Absurdity, engages with themes of post-ideological survival, techno-anarchy, and the aesthetics of failure, constructing experimental ecosystems where absurdity becomes a condition of endurance and imagination.
